Resolutions

When it comes down to it, each committee is responsible for coming up with resolutions which will hopefully solve the issues which they are discussing. Of course resolutions have a specific format and must be realistic in their scope. Here's a really good linkon the basic format of a resolution paper.

Resolution Paper

This is a sample UN resolution paper:

Sample Paper (doesn't actually have anything to do with our questions, but it's a good reference for what the UN is realistically capable of doing) - this website also has a ton of links to different UN resolutions

Starving for Attention

This is a link to a video concerning the effects of the global recession in the third world. It also contains other links to very informative websites including a link to the official website of the London Summit. Although the summit occurred a while ago (April 2009), the information on the website is very useful for learning about the key issues of global economic recovery, and the stance that the global community has taken.

What is biofuels?

Here is a slideshow from a plant science course offered at the University of Alberta. It just basically touches on the topic of biofuels beginning by describing them and then explaining how they can be an alternative to oil products. The problem with current petroleum dependency and the negative points associated with biofuels are addressed as well.

Women's rights in the last year

Reproductive rights are directly tied to a woman's ability to protect herself and participate fully in society. Barbara Crossette makes convincing arguments for the necessity of the UN to address the continuing lack of reproductive rights in many countries.
In other parts of the world, women continue to stand up for their rights. Women were outraged in Malaysia when it was proposed that they would need a signed letter from their families to travel anywhere. Speaking to Al Jazeera Ivy Josiah, executive director of Malaysia's Women's Aid Organisation, said the suggestion was "very alarming" and a "sad reflection of the paternalistic values of our society".
In Bangladesh in April there were riots over women's rights. When the government granted women property rights over 5000 men protested. Here again we see the conflict between traditional Shariah law and equal rights for women. This will be a major hurdle for the committee to overcome.
